Our dentist, Dr. Duane C. Clouse, and our dental team care for your child and their smile. This is why we encourage you to make sure your child has the best sippy cup possible. Unfortunately, there are some sippy cups that can alter the smile. So, to help you choose the right sippy cup in Maricopa, Arizona, we have some helpful information for you.

First, let’s talk about the different types of sippy cups available, which are:

-The transition cup: This cup helps your child transition from breast or bottle feeding to their first cup. It will usually have handles and a soft nipple. This is recommended for children 4-12 months old.

-The toddler cup: This cup doesn’t usually have handles because it helps your child improve their dexterity. It will usually have a straw or spout, and it is recommended for kids between 12 months to 3 years old.

-Kid bottle: This cup is much bigger than the toddler cup and it looks like your water bottle—only smaller. It is usually recommended for children who are 3 years old or older.

The American Dental Association recommends that you avoid sippy cups with valves. These are plastic pieces that keep the liquid from quickly escaping the cup. This is recommended because these valves encourage sucking instead of sipping. Sipping is recommended over sucking. Also, when choosing between cups with straws and cups with spouts, choose the cups with straws. These cups lower your child’s chances of falling victim to tooth decay. This is because the straw keeps the liquid from having a lot of contact with the front teeth.
