Fluorosis is a condition in which the teeth have white or brown streaks or spots. The condition is caused by an overexposure to fluoride while the teeth are forming in the jaw.

There are some important things to remember about fluorosis. First, it only affects teeth that have not erupted. If your child’s teeth have erupted, fluorosis will not be an issue. Second, in many cases, the effects of fluorosis are not easy to see. Often, the only person who will notice fluorosis in your child is your dentist. And, fluorosis is a cosmetic issue, not a health issue. The spots or streaks on your child’s teeth can be easily treated by your dentist.

If you are concerned about fluorosis, you should talk with your dentist. For children under the age of six, they should have a pea-sized drop of toothpaste on their brushes, and products containing fluoride should be kept where young children cannot reach them.

Your dentist is the best person to determine if you and your family are getting enough fluoride. In most cases, if you live in an area that has a fluoridated water supply, and your family uses a fluoride toothpaste, you should be getting sufficient amounts of fluoride. If your dentist determines that you need more fluoride, he may prescribe a fluoride toothpaste, treatments or supplements.
