Helping your child form consistent, efficient dental hygiene habits is vital. These habits can stay with your child for a lifetime, so they can have a healthier smile. But how can you get your child excited about dental hygiene and dental care? Dr. Duane C. Clouse and our team are thrilled to offer some advice for making dental hygiene fun for your child!
Brush & Floss Together
To get your child excited about brushing and flossing, consider cleaning your teeth together. Children mimic what they see their parents doing. Show your child proper brushing and flossing technique. If they are too young to brush their teeth on their own, help them.
Allow your child to pick out their toothbrush, or choose one for them that is colorful or that has a favorite cartoon character on it. Make sure that the toothbrush has soft bristles and a head that is small enough to fit in all areas of your child’s mouth. If your son or daughter’s toothbrush is fun, they will be more excited about brushing their teeth.
You may be surprised to learn that toothpaste can be exciting or fun for your child. It is likely that your child will not be excited about minty toothpaste, but he or she might race to the bathroom to brush if the toothpaste had a tasty flavor. Toothpastes come in many fun flavors, including strawberry and watermelon. When your child is young, we advise that you purchase a child’s toothpaste that is safe to swallow.
